School city threatens to expel students accused of living in Hammond: "WHITING Despite a new open enrollment policy designed to attract students from outside the city, Whiting schools are threatening to expel two students accused of living outside of the district.
Michele Diringer, the mother of Whiting High School sophomore Giovanni Cruz, 15, and Justina Cruz, 11, a Nathan Hale Elementary School fifth-grader, said school officials called Monday and told her to pick up her children. According to documents, the brother and sister will be expelled for failing to reside in the School City of Whiting.
Giovanni said he was pulled out of class Monday morning.
'They told me they saw me walking into a house in Hammond -- in my aunt's house in Robertsdale,' he said. 'This is messed up.'"
