Docs rally in Gary for universal health care

Docs rally for universal health care: "Medicare, the federal health care system for seniors, runs on such a model. But talk of creating a universal health care plan run or overseen by the government has helped spark protests across the country.

Mike Huntington, a radiation oncologist from Corvallis, Ore., said there's a difference between the rage shown at some health care reform town hall meetings and anger. He is one of the core group of Oregon doctors who started the Mad as Hell Doctors group. He said the doctors are angry that private companies are helping shape congressional health care reform instead of physicians and the public. They are channeling that anger into a 25-stop cross-country trip that will end Sept. 30 on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building. He said health care reform is the equivalent of this generation's civil rights movement.

"I don't believe we have a democracy if you don't give basic human rights," he said.

Hammond Mayor McDermott calls arrest of ally 'dirtiest trick'

Mayor calls arrest of ally 'dirtiest trick': "The sheriff said he did it, because 'I have never been intimidated by political threats.'

The mayor's message to the sheriff stated: 'As you probably know ... I'm sure you do know that Dave Woerpel was arrested, his wife was arrested, his two sons were arrested. They were swept up, because there was five tiny pot plants growing in their backyard. ... Nonetheless, they were swept up in a warrant. Tina was arrested in front of her employees in the (city) recycling center. You would think they were growing pounds and pounds of marijuana in the backyard, but it turns out they were growing five small, little plants, which leads me to believe that somebody is playing politics, and it's got to be either you or (Lake County Police Chief) Marco (Kuyachich) or (Lake County Prosecutor) Bernie (Carter). So I'm calling all three of you, and I'm going to let you know that I'm definitely getting involved in the sheriff's race, and I'm pissed off. Roy, this is completely, completely uncalled for. Dave Woerpel is the captain of the 5th District, captain in the city of Hammond ... very, very powerful, very, very political, and you guys arrested him and he had nothing to do with it. Nothing. Roy, that's the dirtiest trick I've ever seen. Have a nice day.'

McDermott denied this week he was trying to intimidate or in any way influence the court proceedings against the Woerpels.

'I'm not excusing the conduct of Dave Woerpel at all or his family. Obviously, there was marijuana in his backyard. But I've practiced law for years, and I've seen a lot of cases like this. And this one is unique."

Michele Diringer, the mother of Whiting High School sophomore Giovanni Cruz, 15, and Justina Cruz, 11, a Nathan Hale Elementary School fifth-grader, said school officials called Monday and told her to pick up her children. According to documents, the brother and sister will be expelled for failing to reside in the School City of Whiting.
Giovanni said he was pulled out of class Monday morning.

'They told me they saw me walking into a house in Hammond -- in my aunt's house in Robertsdale,' he said. 'This is messed up.'"

Seattle wideout Houshmandzadeh challenges Bears D

Seattle wideout challenges Bears: "CHICAGO Bears defensive players can find fault so far only with their inability to create turnovers. Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a somewhat harsher critic.

During a conference call with Chicago reporters Wednesday, Houshmandzadeh promised he could beat Bears cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman '95 percent' of the time in this Sunday's game at Qwest Field.

'I feel like I'm going to get open every play, every time,' Houshmandzadeh said. 'But that's not going to be the case. Those guys get paid well. I feel I'm going to win regardless, but I have to be realistic. I feel I'm going to win 95 percent of the time and they can get the other 5.'"

What Is Your Urine Telling You? - AOL Health

What Is Your Urine Telling You? - AOL Health: "'Urine is a window into health, disease and diet,' says Jeff Schlaudecker, M.D., assistant professor of Family Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Because everything you eat and drink gets filtered through your kidneys, your urine is a reflection of your diet. It can also alert you to other things that might be going on in your body."

Top 5 Sneaky Overdraft Traps - WalletPop

Top 5 Sneaky Overdraft Traps - WalletPop: "2. Reordered Transactions

Just because you bought a smoothie in the morning with your debit card and paid your rent in the afternoon doesn't mean that's the order in which your transactions will be cleared.

Banks often change the order in which debit transactions clear – and tend to clear debits before clearing any deposits made – from highest to lowest amounts. By doing so, the customer's account is depleted more quickly and they'll incur more overdraft fees, says BornĂ©.

Say you have $100 in your account. You buy a latte ($5), gas ($50), groceries ($35), swing by the drugstore ($8) and the dry cleaner's ($25). Processed chronologically, only the last transaction triggers an overdraft. Reordered from high to low three purchases do.

Institutions justify this practice by claiming that the largest withdrawals, like a mortgage or car payment, are the most important and should be paid first, says Borné. Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, PNC Bank and Wachovia pay daily transactions in order from highest to lowest, according to a CFA survey. SunTrust and U.S. Bank use any processing order they choose.

Solution: Buffer your account with an extra $100 that you don't intend to spend. That way, small day-to-day transactions won't end up costing you more than you anticipated."

Top 5 Sneaky Overdraft Traps - WalletPop

Top 5 Sneaky Overdraft Traps - WalletPop: "Next time you use a debit card to buy a $5 latte, make sure your checking account has enough cash to cover it. Otherwise, that latte could cost you close to $40, thanks to the overdraft fees you'll incur.

In order to get more money out of consumers, banks and credit unions have increased overdraft fees and made it easier to trigger them, says Jean Ann Fox, director of financial services for the Consumer Federation of America. At the heart of the problem are so-called 'courtesy' overdraft policies, which allow banks to pay charges that would otherwise bounce. Instead of incurring an insufficient funds fee, account holders get hit with overdraft fees that can run as high as $35.

'It's the only form of credit that can be involuntarily imposed on you,' says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center. 'There's no point to it except to generate fees.' Financial institutions collect more than $17.5 billion in overdraft fees per year, according to the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), a nonprofit policy group.

There are, however, positive developments on the consumer front. Working its way through Congress is the Consumer Overdraft Protection Fair Practices Act, legislation that aims to prohibit overdraft fees unless the consumer opts for 'courtesy' overdrafts. Even if a consumer opts for overdraft protection, they must receive a warning of an impending fee before they finalize a purchase that may trigger the overdraft fee.

Consumers don't have to wait for the legislation to get signed into law to avoid overdraft fees. They just need to be proactive about their accounts and buying habits."

8 Steps To Dig Into Your Credit Report - WalletPop

Digging Into Your Credit Report - WalletPop: "We all want the highest credit score possible -- but how do we get there? In today's economy, your financial health means everything, so it's crucial to make sure your score accurately reflects your credit history.

When a creditor orders a credit report, it's like a snapshot of your financial and personal life. If all the information is accurate, it should factually reflect your outstanding credit, payment history, the status of your credit accounts, and any information that can be found in public records. But that all depends on when your creditors report their data about you -- and a few days can make a big difference in your report.

To find out what your creditors see in you, order a free copy (you're entitled to one a year) from each of the credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Once you have your report, you can ensure it says what you need it to say by taking seven simple steps"

2011 Ford Super Duty debuts at Texas State Fair — Autoblog: The circle is now complete. Following a couple model years after the redesigned F-150, Ford has taken the wraps off the new 2011 Super Duty model at the Texas State Fair today. The new Super Duty debuts with a new look, new diesel engine called 'Scorpion' 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8, and an all-new 6.2-liter gas-powered V8 (NOTE: This should be the same 6.2-liter V8 destined for duty in the F-150 SVT Raptor). Yes, Bucky Covington Is Smarter Than a 5th Grader! - The Boot

Yes, Bucky Covington Is Smarter Than a 5th Grader! - The Boot: "Bucky Covington gets a passing grade for his recent appearance on the hit TV show, 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?' Winning $25,000 for his charity, the Arthritis Foundation, brainy Bucky answered every single question correctly in the first round. He admits he considered risking it all for the bonus-round question, and a chance at $250,000, but ultimately was unwilling to chance taking the much smaller consolation prize had he answered the final question incorrectly."
