The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs : A not-so-brief chat with Randall Stephenson of AT&T

The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs : A not-so-brief chat with Randall Stephenson of AT&T:
A not-so-brief chat with Randall Stephenson of AT&T

So we set up a call with Randall this morning to discuss some of the profoundly stupid things his guy Ralph de la Vega said recently about creating incentives that would encourage people to stop using AT&T’s data network so much. Point of the talk was, when you’re lucky enough to create a smash hit product — when the stars align, and the hardware is great and the ecosystem is great and the apps are great and the whole experience is great, and everything you do just makes everything else better, and you’re totally on a roll and can do no wrong — when that happens, you do not go out and try to fuck it all up by discouraging people who love your product. What you do, instead, is you fix your fucking shitty ass network you fucking shit-eating-grin-wearing hillbilly ass clown!

Shots Of Facebook’s Upcoming Redesign In The Wild, With A New Emphasis On Search

Over the last few days, Facebook has apparently been rolling out some UI changes to a small number of users, moving many of the navigation elements that currently rest at the bottom of the screen back to the left sidebar. The changes are subtle enough that they probably won’t spark yet another user rebellion against Facebook — aside from the people who will hate it automatically — but they’re very significant.

Credit card reform; new law and fees -

Banks no longer even pretend

The one silver lining is that the public is finally seeing how devious and untrustworthy credit card lenders truly are. When issuers limited themselves to beating up on folks with bad credit, it was too easy for the rest of us to dismiss their foul tactics as business as usual. Now that the schoolyard bullies are going after everyone, the need for putting restraints on the industry is ever more obvious.

Although virtually every issuer has participated in the madness, a few have managed to distinguish themselves and deserve to be called out. For example:

After promising to stop raising interest rates in advance of the Credit CARD Act's implementation, Bank of America announced it would start slapping annual fees on accounts -- a direct contradiction of its Oct. 5 pledge to stop 're-pricing' customer accounts.

Citibank has been raising rates, then promising to rebate a portion of the interest paid to customers who charge a certain amount every month. In other words, the lender will give customers a small kickback as long as they keep digging a bigger debt hole for themselves.

HSBC apparently lowered at least one customer's credit limit simply because he lives in California. (I know some people are mindlessly biased against Californians, but this is ridiculous.)

#NWI: Bulls/Sox Training Academy moves to Omni 41

Bulls/Sox Training Academy moves to Omni 41: "The baseball and softball training facility owned by the Chicago White Sox will provide professional, personal and team training for Indiana players ages 5 to major league. It will conduct hitting, pitching and fielding instruction starting in mid-November for both baseball and fast pitch softball players.

'We've been looking for the perfect site for our Indiana operation and Omni 41 is a special place,' said Sox Training Academy Director Bobby Morris. 'The additional space along with the addition of some new instructors will make our Academy the perfect place to train.'

Morris is especially pleased to add Bill Bryk, Sr. to the staff, which features Florida Marlins Minor League Hitting Coordinator John Mallee and Minor League Hitting Coach Anthony Iapoce. Bryk serves as Special Assistant to the General Manager of the San Diego Padres and is one of the top pitching instructors in the area."

#NWI: Grandmother and aunt of #Gary police officer slain

Grandmother and aunt of Gary police officer slain: "Lillie L. Miller, 79, was found dead at her home at 733 Tyler St. around 9 p.m., said Gary police Detective Cpl. Gabrielle King. Donessa Miller, 52, the victim's daughter, was rushed to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary and pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Lillie Miller was the grandmother of Gary Police Patrolman Damon Bradshaw and Donessa Miller was his aunt, King said.

Police were dispatched to the Tyler Street home at 8:54 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of a person down, according to King, a department spokeswoman. Police found both women unresponsive in the home.

Detectives were interviewing a person of interest in the homicides at the police station Saturday night, King said.

The preliminary cause of death for both women was asphyxia due to compression, according to the coroner's office.

Dwight Taylor, president of Concerned Citizens Against Violence in Gary, said he and a few other people held a prayer vigil outside the victims' home at 4 p.m. Saturday. Taylor has led a number of anti-violence marches and prayer vigils in Gary.

He said when he heard about the deaths of the two women it made him sick to his stomach."

#Crown Point may pick up light tab #NWI

Crown Point may pick up light tab: "Mayor David Uran asked City Engineer Tris Miles at a recent Crown Point Board of Works meeting to get in touch with Merrillville about the streetlights on 93rd Avenue.

Merrillville is disconnecting every other light on 93rd Avenue and the town's other main thoroughfares to reduce its utility bill. Town Councilman Lance Huish said he also wants to disconnect all of the decorative streetlights on 93rd Avenue.

Uran said he understood Merrillville was looking for ways to save money, but residents along that street had contacted City Councilman Andrew Kyres with concerns about safety.

Uran said because the only residents along the street were on the Crown Point side, he was open to Miles finding out from Merrillville how much it would cost to keep the lights on.

Some Merrillville town councilmen said they have no problems if Crown Point pays for lights on 93rd Avenue."

#Porter #NWI: New Porter hospital could attract development

New Porter hospital could attract development: "As president of the Commercial In-Sites real estate brokerage firm and owner of 14 acres of vacant land along Ind. 49 in Chesterton, he was convinced the $210 million state-of-the art hospital and related medical office building would be a big incentive for national restaurant chains, hotels and retailers to consider opening up shop nearby in Porter County.

These are the types of investments that occur regardless of the shape of the economy, Lasser said.

Porter County Plan Commission Director Bob Thompson said his office has received a few calls from landowners near the hospital site seeking information about allowable uses for their property.

Most of the unincorporated land north of U.S. 30 along Ind. 49 is currently zoned for residential use, but owners could petition for changes, he said. No one has yet submitted any plans for developments piggybacking on the planned hospital, a two-year project expected to break ground this spring.
Chesterton officials are including a discussion on how the town can factor into the new hospital as part of their efforts to update the community's comprehensive plan, said Town Manager Bernie Doyle.

The community has two prime locations for development on either side of Ind. 49, just south of the Indiana Toll Road, he said.

Valparaiso has not received any inquiries from developers as a result of the Porter hospital project, said city Planning Director Craig Phillips

For First Time Under Obama, Majority Says U.S. Is on Wrong Track -- Politics Daily

For First Time Under Obama, Majority Says U.S. Is on Wrong Track -- Politics Daily: "Fifty-two percent say the country is on the wrong track compared to 36 percent who say it is headed in the right direction with 9 percent saying conditions are mixed and 3 percent undecided. While there have been pluralities saying the U.S. is on the wrong track in four of the previous five WSJ/NBC polls during Obama's presidency, this is the first time the number broke 50 percent. The one month where that was not true was April when 43 percent said things were on the right track and an equal number said they were going in the opposite direction.

President Obama's job approval rating stands at 51 percent, the same number it had been during the previous two months.

But the approval ratio for his handling of the economy has dipped from 51 in September to 47 percent in October. Forty-nine percent are very dissatisfied with the state of the economy and another 31 percent are somewhat dissatisfied. Seventeen percent are somewhat satisfied and only 2 percent are very satisfied.

Fifty-eight percent say there is 'still a ways to go' before the economy hits bottom, while 29 percent believe the economy has bottomed out. But a plurality - 42 percent - believe things will get better in the next 12 months compared to 33 percent who say they will stay the same and 22 percent who predict things will be worse. Sixty-three percent believe that current conditions are due to factors Obama inherited while 20 percent say he is responsible for them."

15-Year-Old Girl Held in Slaying of Elizabeth Olten

15-Year-Old Girl Held in Slaying of Elizabeth Olten: "Earlier Wednesday, Cole County Judge Jon Beetem said the suspect in Elizabeth's killing would remain in custody pending a decision about whether the 15-year-old should be tried as an adult or as a juvenile. An attorney for the suspect waived a scheduled detention hearing Wednesday that was to be closed to the public.

The suspect's name has not been released but local media, ABC News and HLN all identified the suspect as a teenage girl.

Beetem also ruled Wednesday that a Nov. 18 hearing on whether to try the teenager as an adult would be open to the public. However, the judge is barring the recording or broadcasting of that hearing and is not permitting photographs from it.

Kurt Valentine, the teen's lawyer, said Elizabeth's death has put Jefferson City in 'turmoil,' and had argued that opening the hearing could hamper the chances for a fair trial.
'There's been a lot of speculation, but now we will have in giant headlines my client's name,' Valentine said. 'There is no way in the world that could possibly be in the best interest of this particular juvenile.'

Samantha Green, the attorney for the juvenile office, argued that the state Supreme Court has ruled that hearings can be open for juveniles accused of crimes that would be the most serious felonies if committed by an adult. She said court records and the exhibits to be presented could be closed or sealed to protect the suspect's privacy."

Mortgage debt waived after bank can't find paperwork

Mortgage debt waived after bank can't find paperwork: "Two weeks ago, a bankruptcy court in suburban New York did the formerly unthinkable: It waived a homeowner's mortgage debt after the bank trying to foreclose on the home couldn't submit any proof that it actually had a claim on the property.

According to the New York Times, when lender PHH Mortgage was asked to provide proof that it actually held the deed for the $461,263 mortgage, it couldn't give the judge any records.

Operating on the entirely reasonable principal that someone who claims to possess a piece of paper that gives them ownership to a nearly half-million dollar house should actually have that piece of paper, the judge slapped a stiff and possibly game-changing punishment on the disorganized lender."

15 Signs Your Workplace is Dysfunctional - Careers Articles

15 Signs Your Workplace is Dysfunctional - Careers Articles: "Sign No. 2: Bringing up a problem is considered more as evidence of a personality defect rather than as an actual observation of reality
In a dysfunctional company, what it looks like is not only more important than what it is, it is what it is. If you don't believe that, you are the problem. A surprising amount of information is classified. Dysfunctional companies have more state secrets than the CIA. Anything that might embarrass the boss turns out to be a national security issue.

Sign No. 3: If by chance there are problems, the usual solution is a motivational seminar
Attitude is everything, especially in places where facts are embarrassing or inconvenient. In a dysfunctional family, there's an elephant -- usually a drunken abusive parent -- in the parlor, but no one ever mentions him. To appear sane, you have to pretend that the elephant is invisible, and that drives you crazy. Businesses are full of invisible elephants, too. Usually they are things that might cause difficulties for people with enough clout to prevent their discussion. The emperor may be naked, but if you have a good attitude, you won't mention it.

Sign No. 4: Double messages are delivered with a straight face
Quality and quantity are both job one. You can do it both cheaper and better, just don't ask how. If you're motivated enough you should know already."

Cops: Dope delivered to hospital :: Porter County :: Post-Tribune

Cops: Dope delivered to hospital :: Porter County :: Post-Tribune: "VALPARAISO -- A Porter County Jail inmate got his girlfriend to bring drugs to him while he was hospitalized, police said.

A nurse overheard their conversation and called police, leading to additional charges against Dereck Ewing, 27, of Crown Point. Four of his visitors also were arrested after the 6:20 p.m. Thursday incident at Porter hospital, according to the police report.

Ewing's girlfriend, Cassandra Taylor, 25, of rural Valparaiso, eventually told police she bought $100 worth of heroin in Chicago and brought most of it to Ewing's room at the hospital. He allegedly flushed two plastic bags worth down the toilet when police arrived, but more was discovered hidden on his visitors and in the macaroni and cheese on his meal tray. Ewing also allegedly swiped a vial of a prescription narcotic from another floor of the hospital while undergoing tests.

Ewing faces three new felony charges: possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a prescribed drug without a prescription.

Taylor is charged with two felonies: dealing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Ryan Cano, 20, of Crown Point, is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Joseph McChristian, 46, of Valparaiso, is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance."

This has got to be the dumbest group of criminals ever... and what if they would have bought guns... so you can be in jail in the hospital and have unsupervised visits... Porter County needs to get it together.

Merrillville to shut out lights by Nov. 4 :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune

Merrillville to shut out lights by Nov. 4 :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune: "The council voted to shut off every other street light on main streets, except at major intersections and where it is deemed unsafe to do so, and all the decorative lighting on 93rd Avenue in hopes of shaving $5,000 a month off its current $15,000 a month cost to operate the lights. No subdivisions will be affected by the cutback, however.

'I want to get down to $10,000 a month. That's what we can afford to pay,' said Councilman Richard Hardaway, D-2nd. He said if the town's action doesn't bring about the necessary savings, the council would have to make more cuts.

Hardaway asked Public Works Director Bruce Spires to provide a count of the number of lights disconnected by Nov. 4, when he will be meeting with Northern Indiana Public Service Co. officials to discuss actions the town has taken to lower its electric costs and to pay off its outstanding $400,000 bill."

Seriously... cut off traffic lights too (why not), darkness equal crime... What the hell?

Gary man cited in attack on woman after leaving Elbow Room :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune

Gary man cited in attack on woman :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune: "Royal Leon Logan, 64, of 275 Van Buren Street, faces a maximum 50-year prison sentence if convicted of the charges filed Monday in Lake Superior Court in Crown Point.

'I'm dying of cancer. I'm 65 years old, and you're going to die, too,' Logan is quoted in court records as saying after he put a gun to the woman's side at 12:45 a.m. Saturday at 25th Avenue and Adams Street in Gary. The woman had just left the Elbow Room when she noticed Logan following her.

Logan is charged with forcing the woman into his car, then driving her to his home, where he ordered her to undress and said he was going to rape her. When she didn't comply fast enough, Logan cocked the gun. She took off her boots, then fled from the home, where he fired two shots that whizzed past her head, court records state.

As she was climbing fences and railroad embankments to escape, he was following in his car.

Proposal to ease teacher standards stirs opposition :: Local News :: Post-Tribune

Proposal to ease teacher standards stirs opposition :: Local News :: Post-Tribune: "Under the new rules, superintendents would no longer need an academic background in education, principals would replace universities in determining relicensure, coursework in education would be cut back and noneducation college graduates could become teachers following on-line coursework and a paper-pencil test.

'It's becoming apparent to me that there's an attack on public education,' said Rep. Chuck Moseley, D-Portage, who listened Tuesday.

Regarding relicensure changes, Debora Porter of the Portage Township Schools testified it was unreasonable for school systems to keep up with and sign off on the licensure of each teacher -- a procedure now done by the state on the recommendation of a university's school of education.

An angry State Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, bristled at the proposed changes saying about Republican leaders: 'They don't want to educate all children, just the elite.'
Merrillville Superintendent Tony Lux simply urged the board, 'Slow down.'

'We're not anti-reform, we're anti-REPA,' said Lux. 'You have had no honest dialog with the stakeholders closest to the issues.'"

Why is that the only black person that they report on... was considered angry in his responses--- really?

Teen suspects back in Lake County custody :: Local News :: Post-Tribune

Teen suspects back in Lake County custody :: Local News :: Post-Tribune: "The teens reportedly have blamed each other for the shootings, and charging affidavits do not detail the killings. Murder charges have not been filed against either teen, and investigators do not believe Kevin Langley is a real person.

Brooks and Thompson were seen by multiple witnesses riding in the McClendons' stolen Cadillac El Dorado in the days after the killings, and were captured on surveillance video selling jewelry stolen from the McClendons at a Hammond pawn shop.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. said murder charges against the teens are likely after police have analyzed evidence, including DNA that links the teens to the murders.
The teens will be lodged separately in the maximum security section of the jail, said Marco Kuyachich, chief of the Lake County Sheriff's Police.

Investigators still are seeking witnesses who saw others riding in the McClendons' green 1997 El Dorado in the days after the killings. Anyone with information may contact Hammond Police at 219-853-6490."

Neighborhood quiet, residents fearful :: Local News :: Post-Tribune: "Most residents are at work, and those that are home don't know or aren't interested in talking about Reo Jon'Ta Thompson, 18, and Gregory Brooks Jr., 17. Thompson and Brooks, who are charged in a violent robbery that ended with the McClendons both killed by gunshot wounds, lived only a half-mile from the couple.

One local business owner, who didn't wish to be identified because she fears reprisals, said she had several run-ins with Thompson.

'He shot at my three dogs with a BB-gun and paintball gun,' she said. 'He asked, 'Do your dogs like bullets?' '

She said she filed a police report in that incident and a situation where Thompson allegedly assaulted her with a brick, but no charges were ever filed.

'You just wonder if something was done before now would this have happened,' she said. 'People think these thugs are coming into our neighborhood from Chicago, but they're from our neighborhood.'"

H1N1 personally hits doc, son :: Jerry Davich :: Post-Tribune

H1N1 personally hits doc, son :: Jerry Davich :: Post-Tribune: "Lisa Gold figured her 7-year-old son, Sam, had the flu when he returned home from school with a cough, sniffles and high fever.

Gold, a member of an H1N1-virus task force at Saint Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, knew her son didn't have any chronic risk factors such as asthma or allergies. And that only 1 to 2 percent of H1N1 cases involve serious complications.

Gold, from North Point Pediatrics in Crown Point, contacted me to encourage parents to get their children vaccinated against the H1N1 virus.

'It's important for parents to be on top of this virus and this issue,' Gold told me after Sam returned home from the hospital. 'Parents should be cautious, but not paranoid.'

As you know, H1N1 is in the news because it is a novel strain of influenza A. Yet why it's targeting kids, including seemingly healthy kids, 'is the big mystery about this virus,' Gold said.

More than 1,000 deaths, including nearly 100 children, are related to the H1N1 virus, in addition to 20,000 patients hospitalized from its complications. (Roughly 35,000 Americans die from seasonal flu each year.)

But because the 2009 H1N1 flu is a new strain, which means people have not yet built up immunity, experts can't predict how people will physically respond to it.
So health officials"

Neighborhood tips led police 'right to them' :: Local News :: Post-Tribune

Neighborhood tips led police 'right to them' :: Local News :: Post-Tribune: "HAMMOND -- At least one suspect in the slayings of city civic leaders Ruby and Milton Wayman McClendon was no stranger to the criminal justice system and likely knew his alleged victims.

Court records outlining charges against 17-year-old Reo Jon'Ta Thompson show the teen lived just two blocks away from the McClendons' home in the 1000 block of Field Street. It's the same address listed in charges filed in 2008 against a then 16-year-old Thompson, alleging he and another teen raped a 15-year-old girl in the basement of a Hammond house.

The charges were dropped in February, some eight months before Thompson allegedly forced his way into the McClendons' home with 18-year-old co-defendant Gregory Brooks Jr. in a violent robbery attempt that ended with the McClendons both killed by gunshot wounds.

Brooks Jr. and Thompson face nine counts each of robbery, burglary and confinement that could see them spend the rest of their lives behind bars if convicted.

Charging documents state both teens admitted planning a robbery of the McClendons for the night of Oct. 19, drawing Milton Wayman McClendon to his front door by asking for help with their car. They then pushed their way inside, beating the 78-year-old Milton until he offered some jewelry. The teens, who claim they were accompanied by a gun-wielding accomplice named Kevin Langley, then took $50 from Ruby's purse, and a .22-caliber rifle, then tied the couple up and left them in a closet.

The teens then told police they returned later to "finish them."

The teens reportedly each have named the other as the shooter, and investigators do not believe Langley exists.

Gary mayor's letter touted in Vegas before ceremony :: Local News :: Post-Tribune

Gary mayor's letter touted in Vegas before ceremony :: Local News :: Post-Tribune: "A Jackson family museum has been a goal of Gary mayors for more than a decade. Clay pointed out Tuesday that Joe Jackson visited Gary in July 2008 to renew the museum talks.

'You made a visit to Gary and to the Mayor's office to discuss building a Jackson Family Museum in Gary, Indiana, with vision and love, and we are on our way to making it happen,' Clay wrote in his letter to Jackson dated Oct. 9.

The issue of LVH Magazine passed out Tuesday also includes a photograph of the Jackson Family home at 2300 Jackson Street, as well as photographs of Clay with Joe Jackson during Jackson's visit in 2008. City Council member Kimberly Robinson, D-5th District, and Lake County Recorder Mike Brown also appear in the photographs.

Gary press secretary LaLosa Burns penned an article for the magazine about the regret felt in Michael Jackson's childhood town after his death in June, and about Clay's hope to make the Jackson Family museum a reality.

'The construction of a Jackson Family Museum and Performing Arts Theater could be the start of a new beginning for Gary,' Burns wrote. 'Both proponents and opponents are rallying together to write the vision and to realize the vision.'"

thank-heaven-for-legal-tax-havens.html: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

thank-heaven-for-legal-tax-havens.html: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance: "Business Tax Breaks
Business owners, including those who set up a sideline to supplement full-time wage income, can use several IRS-approved tax shelters.

Section 179 of the tax code allows you to deduct substantial costs of business property purchases in the tax year they are made. Without this provision, the costs of items such as furniture and other equipment special to your business would have to be recovered through depreciation over several years, says Scharin.

If you operate your business out of your home, you could be entitled to a home office deduction. With this tax break, you can convert some of the maintenance cost of your home to tax deductions.

'The insurance on your house or if you need a new roof, a percentage of these costs would be deductible,' says Scharin. The amount is figured using the percentage of space that your home office represents.

A business owner also can hire the spouse and kids as long as they do real work for the company. 'That gets additional income to them and provides deductions to the business,' says Luscombe."

Caron Butler's extreme Mountain Dew addiction - Ball Don't Lie - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

More on Caron Butler's extreme Mountain Dew addiction - Ball Don't Lie - NBA - Yahoo! Sports: "Wizards All-Star forward Caron Butler(notes), now blogging for NBA.com as 'Agent Zero 2.0,' dives deeper into the caffeinated murk of his addiction to the 'neon-yellow rocket fuel' known as Mountain Dew:

I lost 11 pounds this summer by giving up Mountain Dew. That's right Mountain Dew. A lot of people don't know I'm a Mountain Dew addict so I guess this is my confession.
To try and give this up was crazy for me! I was going through withdrawals. I was in the bed sweating. My wife would turn over in the bed and ask 'Are you OK?' Honestly, those first two weeks without The Dew [were] the roughest two weeks of my life. I'm talking headaches, sweats and everything. Before that I drank at least six 12-ounce Mountain Dews a day"

Top 5 America's Safest Cities - Yahoo! Real Estate

America's Safest Cities - Yahoo! Real Estate: "These metros have the lowest rates of violent crime, workplace deaths, fatal crashes and natural disasters
After living five years in New York City and waiting tables while working part time as actors, Pamela Russell and her husband Todd were looking for a safer, cheaper place to put down roots--without giving up all the city perks that they so enjoyed in the Big Apple. Luckily for them, they chanced upon the Twin Cities.

'We drove into Minneapolis and fell in love almost instantly,' says Russell, now 38, who settled in Minneapolis with her husband and started a theater company--as well as a family of five kids--10 years ago.' Among the buzz and hum of Minneapolis, the biggest bonus of it all is that the crime rates are shockingly low. Sure, we lock our home at night, but we feel very safe living here.'

Minneapolis tops our list of America's safest cities, and not just for its crime rate. In ranking the cities on our list, we looked at workplace fatalities, traffic-related deaths and natural disaster risk; the City of Lakes ranked in the top 10 of all four categories. It's also one of America's best places to live cheaply and offers easy access to some of the most scenic drives in the country."

  Happy Autumn!

  Happy Autumn!

Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin.   God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you.

He opens you up, touches you deep inside and scoops out all the yucky stuff-- including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc.

Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see.    This was passed on to me from another pumpkin.

Now, it is your turn to pass it to a pumpkin.   I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch.    Happy Fall!

The magazine publisher says if Gary were to land the museum, space near the Genesis Convention Center at Broadway and Fifth Avenue could be offered."

6 pounds of steak devoured in 52 minutes at #Kelsey's #Steakhouse in #Portage

6 pounds of steak devoured in 52 minutes: "Add Ben Williams' name to the short list of those who have conquered the 6-pound challenge at Kelsey's Steakhouse in Portage.

Williams, of Bloomington, Ind., accomplished the feat Wednesday. In 52 minutes, he devoured 96 ounces of top sirloin steak, a salad, baked potato and bread.
He didn't even need any Alka Seltzer to wash down the feast.

'It was cut and chew, cut and chew, cut and chew,' said Williams, 27, a pawn shop manager in Bloomington.

A fan of 'Man v. Food,' Williams girlfriend, Kylene Parobek talked him into the challenge. The show features a host who tackles an impossible meal each episode.

'I never tried to do anything like it before. I'm not a massive eater,' said Williams, who's 6-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs in at 240 pounds.

'I figured I'd give it a shot. If I do it, I do it. If not, I'll take the rest home for tomorrow night's dinner,' he said."

Straight Couple Sues Cruise Line for Being Put on Gay Cruise

Straight Couple Sues Cruise Line for Being Put on Gay Cruise: "When a heterosexual Italian couple booked their cruise vacation, they were not notified that they would be setting sail with a crowd of 1,500 gay men on Italy's first gay cruise.

According to an October 16th report by the Daily Mail, the Italian couple arrived at port to find news crews surrounding the cruise vessel. At first, the couple thought someone famous was onboard—but they soon realized the media was in a frenzy to capture Italy's first all-homosexual cruise.

Even more surprising was the couple's embarrassment when they spotted acquaintances that they had not known were gay onboard the ship.

After witnessing three days of gay-centric parties and activities while the ship sailed from a port near Rome, Italy to Barcelona, Spain and back again, the couple is suing the cruise line for reimbursement of their fare: around $4,500.

The couple, who has not been named, denies that their actions are homophobic. Their lawyer, Antonio Francesconi, told the Daily Mail that the lawsuit 'is not a question of discrimination but one of lost satisfaction because no-one had told them their holiday was at the same time as the gay cruise.'"

Obama's Poll Numbers Take a Beating

Obama's Poll Numbers Take a Beating: "Despite the majority disagreement on issues, the poll also found the president's approval rating remains in the healthy mid-50s. And two-thirds of Americans say he has the personal qualities a president should have.

'It's awfully early yet, but this president might be shaping up to be a little like Ronald Reagan, where people actually didn't often agree with Ronald Reagan's ideas, but they loved the guy,' said Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist and CNN contributor.

A popular president who is less popular on the issues -- Obama could use his personal popularity to rally support for his less popular agenda.

'They still like the messenger. That's important for Obama because he'll be able to look presidential, and Americans may respond to that as he's trying to make a pitch for his health care plan, financial reform, whatever he decides to do in Afghanistan and Iran,' said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director. Video Watch more on what the poll numbers mean »

The poll shows it's a lot harder to keep people liking you when you're governing than when you're politicking. It's a familiar path for presidents, who often start out popular but see their numbers drop as they get down to the nitty-gritty."

IDIOT SIGHTING Email

IDIOT SIGHTING...

IDIOT SIGHTING:
We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, 'Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, 'NO, it's not.' Four is larger than two..

We haven't used Sears repair since.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
My daughter and I went through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, 'you gave me too much money.' I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back. She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said 'We're sorry but we could not do that kind of thing..' The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75 cents in change..

Do not confuse the clerks at McDonald's.

IDIOT SIGHTING: I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: 'Too many deer are being hit by cars out here!' I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.'

From Kingman , KS ..

IDIOT SIGHTING: My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco.. She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.' He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce. From Kansas City

IDIOT SIGHTING: I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, 'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?' To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?' He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

Happened in Birmingham , Ala.

IDIOT SIGHTING : The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, 'What on earth are blind people doing driving?!'

She was a probation officer in Wichita , KS

IDIOT SIGHTING : At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker. She was leaving the company due to 'downsizing.' Our manager commented cheerfully, 'This is fun. We should do this more often..' Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare..

This was a lunch at Texas Instruments.

IDIOT SIGHTING : I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself and for the sake of her life, couldn't understand why her system would not turn on. A deputy with the Dallas County Sheriffs office, no less.

IDIOT SIGHTING When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. 'Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!' His reply, 'I know. I already got that side.'

This was at the Ford dealership in Canton, MS

HOW TO: Install a Facebook Trojan esp W32.Koobface

HOW TO: Install a Facebook Trojan: "The trojan masquerades as a Facebook message with a title like “Nice dancing! Shouldn’t you be ashamed?” or “Some0ne thinks your special and has a *Hot_Crush* on you. Find out who it could be”.

This mail includes a link – to a free hosting site like GeoCities – that when clicked prompts the user to install an .exe file. The trojan then executes a worm called W32.Koobface that locates your Facebook cookies and proceeds to spam your Facebook friends with the same message. Here’s the step by step:

1. Get a Facebook message with a spammy subject line, think nothing of it
2. Click on a suspicious-looking link within that mail
3. Be running Windows (nothing wrong with that, of course)
4. Ignore all warning messages"

CBS Report: Police Account of Steve McNair Death Doesn't Add Up -- NFL FanHouse

CBS Report: Police Account of Steve McNair Death Doesn't Add Up -- NFL FanHouse: "The law enforcement investigation of the deaths of Steve McNair and his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, concluded that Kazemi shot and killed McNair before committing suicide. But a new investigation from CBS News raises serious questions about whether the police properly investigated the incident, and whether they may have reached the wrong conclusion.

On Monday's Early Show, correspondent Armen Keteyian reported that his own three-month investigation (video after the jump) found errors made by the police, including a major one about when Kazemi supposedly bought the murder weapon. Police claimed that they had pinpointed the time when Kazemi bought the murder weapon as during a two-hour period when she was absent from work. But Keteyian reported that the police were wrong about the date on which Kazemi was gone from work for two hours, and that there are major questions about whether she purchased the gun at all."

The Oakland airport pot conundrum | Gadling.com

The Oakland airport pot conundrum Gadling.com: Airports in California are in a bit of a pickle - their state allows the medicinal use of marijuana, but until last year, no airport in the nation allowed users to legally carry their stash on a plane.

Oakland airport is the only one with an official policy permitting pot carrying passengers to fly, though officials do point out that they run the risk of being arrested if they are searched at their destination (if they are flying somewhere medicinal marijuana is not recognized).

Pot for medicinal use has been approved in California since 1996. Until 2008, any marijuana found at Oakland airport meant the cops would be summoned, and the stash thrown away - even though it was obtained legally. FAA regulations ban people from carrying marijuana on a plane - unless it is authorized by a Federal or State law.

According to a local Sheriff, some other Californian airports have an unwritten tolerance policy, while others like Burbank, Ontario and San Diego do not. The Sheriff says all airports in the state should have an official policy supporting the state law, but at the moment, Oakland airport is the only one.

Vietnam Veteran Pete McKibben Reunites With Son Through Facebook

Vietnam Veteran Pete McKibben Reunites With Son Through Facebook: "'The email says, 'You look familiar. Were you in Vietnam or Cambodia between 1972 and '73?'' McKibben told CNN.

After swapping more emails last month, it became clear McKibben's long-lost son, Richard Nabineaux, had found the father he never met.

'And I answered back. I said, 'Well, I guess, yes, I'm the man you're looking for. I don't know what to say.' Thirty-six years later I have a son and two grandkids,' McKibben told CNN.

Nabineaux, who lives in Paris with his wife and two children, had his mom by his side when he found McKibben.

'My reaction was to cry. It was a shock. I didn't know it would be that easy to find him,' Nabineaux said."

Facebook, Twitter users beware: Crooks are a mouse click away - CNN.com

Facebook, Twitter users beware: Crooks are a mouse click away - CNN.com: "It starts with a friend updating his or her status or sending you a message with an innocent link or video. Maybe your friend is in distress abroad and needs some help.

All you have to do is click.

When the message or link is opened, social network users are lured to fake Web sites that trick them into divulging personal details and passwords. The process, known as a phishing attack or malware, can infiltrate users' accounts without their consent.

Once the account is compromised, the thieves can infiltrate the list of friends or contacts and repeat the attack on subsequent victims. Social networking sites show there is ample opportunity to find more victims; the average Facebook user has 120 friends on the site.

'Security is a constant arms race,' said Simon Axten, an associate for privacy and public policy at Facebook. 'Malicious actors are constantly attacking the site, and what you see is actually a very small percentage of what's attempted.'"

Obesity, politics, STDs flow in social networks - CNN.com

Obesity, politics, STDs flow in social networks - CNN.com: "Examining years of research of their own and from others, the authors conclude that social networks, both offline and online, are crucial in understanding everything from voting patterns to the spread of disease.

People have profound influences on each other's behavior within three degrees of separation, the authors find. That means that your friends, your friends' friends, and your friends' friends' friends may all affect your eating habits, voting preferences, happiness, and more. At the fourth degree, however, the influence substantially weakens. Read about their research on how happiness is contagious.

These are not small effects. 'If a mutual friend becomes obese, it nearly triples a person's risk of becoming obese,' the book said. Even geography doesn't matter; you're still at risk for gaining weight if a friend 1,000 miles away gets bigger. Listen to James Fowler talk about social networks »"

UConn mourns stabbing death of Jasper Howard - Yahoo! News

UConn mourns stabbing death of football player - Yahoo! News: "The day after Jasper Howard, 20, of Miami, was stabbed to death in a fight following an on-campus, university sanctioned dance, police Monday continued to interview those attending the dance in search for possible witnesses. Investigators had not identified a suspect or released the name of a second stabbing victim, who was treated and released from a local hospital.

Edsall said he and the team were heartbroken and devastated over the loss of Howard, a junior and the team's starting cornerback who came to the school to get away from the violence on the streets of his hometown. He was the first person in his family to go to college.

'I know Jasper loved the University of Connecticut and he loved his teammates,' Edsall said. 'And he loved the opportunity he was getting here at UConn.'"

Report: 1 in 7 Female Students Pregnant at Chicago High School

It seems Roberson High School is nothing more then a daycare for black students (or lack their of). I'm sure the fact that 99.2% of the students are black play NO role in this right? I'm sure the fact that ONLY 7% of the students (9% is the record ) meet or exceeds Illinois high school standards plays no role either?

The kicker is the state is going to fix a former crack house right across the street from the school (does it get any better then that? crack house?) and turn it into a daycare facility on the taxpayers dime.
