Florida's Silver Alert system for missing seniors is a good model for the nation

We think: Florida's Silver Alert system for missing seniors is a good model for the nation -- OrlandoSentinel.com:

We think: Florida's Silver Alert system for missing seniors is a good model.

As many as 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease. Ten million baby boomers will develop the progressive brain disorder. And 60 percent of its victims will wander from their homes or places of care at some point, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

These troubling statistics make the case for a system to locate individuals with Alzheimer's or other cognitive impairments who go missing -- a Silver Alert, like the Amber Alert for missing children.

In October, following the lead of some other states, Gov. Charlie Crist created a Silver Alert program for Florida, where almost a quarter of the population is over 60. The program draws on the resources of state and local law-enforcement to alert officers, the news media and the public to missing seniors with cognitive impairments. If a vehicle is involved, information can appear on highway message boards.

Florida officials say that all two-dozen seniors for whom alerts have been issued so far have been located. While critics worry that too-frequent highway messages could be overlooked by motorists, a panel will review the performance of the program next year and decide if changes are called for.

Meanwhile, Republican U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida is trying to expand the concept nationwide. After the U.S. House approved a bipartisan bill in September to provide federal grants to help states start Silver Alert programs, Mr. Martinez introduced a Senate version of the legislation with Wisconsin Democrat Herb Kohl.

The Senate bill got buried in the pileup at the end of this year's session. It deserves another chance to become law when Congress reconvenes in January.

Silver Alert tracks missing seniors...

Silver Alert tracks missing seniors www.tennessean.com The Tennessean:

Silver Alert tracks missing seniors

It took only minutes for Morris Nelson to grab the keys to his Ford Explorer and drive away from his Mt. Juliet home, but it took his family and police 12 hours to find him.

And when they did, he was miles away, confused and frightened in a Pulaski, Tenn., neighborhood.

Nelson is one of the more than 100,000 Tennesseans living with Alzheimer's disease. Advocates for the aged hope Nelson and others like him will benefit from legislation being drafted now for a new Silver Alert program used to track missing senior citizens.

About a dozen states have started notification systems to help spread the word when senior citizens wander away on foot or by car. At least a dozen more, including Tennessee, are expected to follow suit within the next year.

Silver Alert programs are modeled after the Amber Alert program, which is used to find missing children. That program was named for a child who went missing.

'It's just as good an idea as the Amber Alert is,' said Jane Bradley, Nelson's daughter. 'Things are in place to do this. The need is going to grow for this. We've got so many people living so much longer and every time I turn around somebody else is suffering with dementia and Alzheimer's.'

More than 10 million baby boomers are expected to develop Alzheimer's disease. An additional 4 million will get some other form of dementia or cognitive impairment, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

Obama’s Helpful Hand in Blago-Rezko ‘Pay-to-Play’ Scheme

Obama’s Helpful Hand in Blago-Rezko ‘Pay-to-Play’ Scheme » Propeller:

The president-elect sponsored a measure in the Illinois senate that made Rezko's kickback plot a lot easier to carry out.

Against the backdrop of Chicago’s Wacker Drive, Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren stood and analyzed Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s most recent “pay-to-play” scheme, the auctioning of President-elect Barack Obama’s seat in the U.S. Senate.

Absent from the analysis of Governor Blagojevich’s role as auctioneer was the governor’s involvement in an earlier scandal. That earlier story went generally untouched by the media — outside of Chicago — because it had a direct bearing on the character of THEN-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AND MEDIA DARLING BARACK OBAMA.

Bridge Collapse at Botanical Garden Kills 1:

ATLANTA (Dec. 19) - A soaring walkway being built to give visitors breathtaking views of the Atlanta Botanical Garden turned into a disaster zone when it suddenly collapsed, sending workers plummeting dozens of feet to the forest below. One worker was killed Friday morning and at least 18 others injured, some critically.

Contractors were pouring concrete on the 'canopy walk,' which climbed as high as 40 feet, when it gave way. Witnesses described a frenzied scene of the pathway shedding dozens of workers as it tumbled to the ground."

Media Matters destroying the credibility of Jerome Corsi, again!

Media Matters destroying the credibility of Jerome Corsi, again!

Since 2004, Media Matters for America has kept a close eye on the media. When a Bill O'Reilly or a Chris Matthews attacks progressive leaders or ideals, Media Matters is there to fight back, every day, in real time.

Join the Media Matters Action Team today and keep the media honest.

When the Clintons reached the White House in 1993, they hadn't even unpacked their boxes before the right-wing noise machine started hyping phony scandals and inventing gossip. Too many in the media played a key role in spreading these smears, forgetting their responsibility as journalists and repeating fiction as fact.

Now it's happening again. The same far-right fanatics and those in the media who disseminate their attacks far and wide are trying to derail the new Democratic administration before it's even gotten off the ground. They spread gossip and suggest scandal where there is none, all in the interest of generating controversy instead of communicating the facts.

This time we have a way to fight back.

Join the Media Matters Action Team today and keep the media honest.

These people get results.

When Jerome Corsi -- who wrote the Swift Boat attack book about John Kerry in 2004 -- published another one about Barack Obama, Media Matters absolutely destroyed his credibility with a detailed takedown of his smears and falsehoods. They also pointed out Corsi's history of bigoted and hate-filled comments directed at other progressive leaders like Bill and Hillary, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy. Media Matters has done the same with books attacking Hillary, standing up to innuendo and distortions and hitting back with the facts.

If we want the new administration to be able to follow through on the promise of change, we need to fight the right-wing noise machine and keep the media honest. We've seen how important that battle is, and Media Matters is out there fighting it every day. Let's give 'em a hand.

Join the Media Matters Action Team today and keep the media honest.

Sincerely,

James Carville

Obama picks global warming expert as science adviser

Obama picks global warming expert as science adviser - Yahoo! News:

President-elect Barack Obama's choice of John P. Holdren as his science adviser sends a strong signal that Obama sees global warming as an urgent problem and wants bold suggestions for action.

The Harvard University environmental policy professor has argued that the world already is experiencing dangerous climate change as a result of fossil fuel combustion. He's said there's still time to avert catastrophe, but only with a strong and rapid global effort.

At a recent talk in Washington , Holdren boiled it down to this...

Without energy there is no economy. Without climate there is no environment. Without economy and environment there's no material well-being, there's no civil society, there's no personal or national or international security. And the problem is that the way we've been getting the energy our economies need is wrecking the climate that our environment needs. That is the essence of the problem.

Biden's Puppy: A Post-Election Gift From Jill (PHOTOS):

It seems President-elect Barack Obama's children were not the only ones promised a dog after the presidential election. Biden's wife, Jill, made the same assurance to her husband if he and Obama, his running mate, won the election.

Jill Biden had taped pictures of different dogs on the back of the seat in front of Biden on his campaign plane to inspire the candidate as he crisscrossed the country in the final sprint to election day, according to published reports during the campaign.

Saturday, Biden selected a three-month-old male German shepherd from one of Brown's litters, a puppy that will turn out to be a 'big boy,' Brown said with a chuckle.
'He is the nicest person on this earth,' Brown said about her meeting with Biden, the Democratic senator from Delaware, now getting ready to take over the office of vice president.

....Biden's granddaughters will name the puppy, Brown said the vice president-elect told her.

Rahm Emanuel Gave Blagojevich List Of 'Acceptable' Senate Candidates: Report:

President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel had direct conversations with Gov. Rod Blagojevich about Obama's replacement in the US Senate, FOX News Chicago reports.

Citing 'a source familiar with the investigation,' Fox says that Emanuel had 'multiple conversations' with Blagojevich and his chief of staff John Harris, who was also arrested Tuesday on federal corruption charges, about the seat and that they we're 'likely recorded and in FBI possession.'

Fox's source said that Emanuel gave the governor's office a list of 'candidates that would be acceptable to President-elect Barack Obama' but no 'quid pro quo' or 'dealmaking' is suspected.

Meanwhile, an angry Emanuel says he won't go to work because of the media stakeout. He told an ABC News cameraman that has received death threats:

Man Throws Shoes At Bush In Iraq During Press Conference (video)

Man Throws Shoes At Bush In Iraq During Press Conference:
"***UPDATE*** 1:27PM

McClatchy reports that the man who hurled his shoes at Bush during his press conference was an Iraqi journalist:
An Iraqi television journalist hurled two shoes at President Bush on Sunday during a joint news conference Bush was holding with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki to mark the signing of a U.S.-Iraq security agreement.

Bush had just finished his prepared remarks in which he said the security agreement was made possible by the U.S. surge of troops earlier this year, whhen the journalist, Muthathar al Zaidi pulled his shoes off and hurled them at the president. 'This is a goodbye kiss, you dog,' Zaidi shouted.
Bush dodged the shoes and was not struck. Bodyguards quickly wrestled Zaidi to the floor and hauled him, kicking and screaming, from the room. Two other Iraqi journalists were briefly detained after one of them called Zaidi's actions 'courageous.'"

Amber Alert test experiences glitch...

Amber Alert test experiences glitch: Rutland Herald Online:

"MONTPELIER — A test of Vermont's Amber Alert system — a law enforcement program to get notifications out quickly when children go missing — turned up a problem Thursday morning.

Vermont State Police officials say a mass e-mail that was supposed to go a large number of recipients did not work as planned.

Authorities say they were able to correct the problem, and the system was functioning by Thursday afternoon.

Vermont has had only one alert under the national program, this past June when 12-year-old Brooke Bennett of Braintree disappeared. She was later found dead and her uncle, 42-year-old Michael Jacques of Randolph, has been charged with abducting, raping and killing her.

"KALAMAZOO -- The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department is looking for a 15-year-old Pavilion Township resident, Savanna Gay, who they say was reported to have been abducted by force from her home Thursday.

Sheriff's Lt. Jim VanDyken said Savanna called her mother Thursday evening saying she had been taken by force from their home in the 8000 block of East O Avenue.

Savanna told her mother she was calling while her abductor was inside a gas station, but she hung up before her mother was able to obtain any other information, VanDyken said."

He said a female acquaintance of Savanna's "reportedly came to her address and took her by some means of force."

VanDyken said that in addition to Savanna, the sheriff's department is looking for Diane Bridges, 19, from the Battle Creek area, who they said might be with her.

He said Savanna is a white female, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 100 pounds, with green eyes and dyed-blond (formerly brown) hair. She was last known to be wearing a white coat with fur around the collar, light blue sweat pants and slippers.

Bridges is a white female, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 130 pounds, with short-cut hair of an unknown color.
He said the vehicle they may be riding in and its license number are unknown, but that it possibly could be a dark-colored Chevrolet Lumina or a white Mazda.

If anyone has information about the location of either Savanna or Bridges, call 911, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department or the police in whose jurisdiction they are seen, Van Dyken said.

New Jersey's attorney general has ordered training of the county prosecutors on the states Amber Alerts System

State orders changes in child abduction cases
Courier-Post staff

New Jersey's attorney general has ordered all county prosecutors to designate "child abduction response team leaders" to oversee missing-child cases.

The directive is to take effect on Jan. 1, said Attorney General Anne Milgram.

The team leaders -- two per county -- will receive standardized training for conducting missing child investigations, said Milgram. They will work with the State Police missing persons unit and other law enforcement agencies.

"Time can be lost and opportunities wasted when law enforcement responds to a report of a missing child without a plan," Milgram said. The new program "will ensure that there is a response plan carefully put together by trained law enforcement officers," she added.

Experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have begun a weeklong training session for new leaders.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton, an early advocate for the team approach, said Milgram's order "will put New Jersey in the forefront of ensuring the safety of our children."

State Police will continue to be immediately notified of Amber Alert requests from local police departments. However, the State Police, in turn, will notify team leaders in the county that submitted the request.

Vermont State Police to test state's Amber Alert system on 12/4/2008

Vermont State Police will test the state's Amber Alert system on Thursday morning.

This will be only the third test of the system since it was installed several years ago. Activation responsibilities have moved from offices in Waterbury, to offices in Rockingham, so police want to make sure there are no glitches.

Vermont's Amber Alert system has only been used once, during the search for Brooke Bennett this summer. State Police say that incident revealed some glitches that have now been fixed.
"One of the benefits that came out of that was we were contacted by a number of different entities, including CCTA, the post office, the postal service and a couple of others who actually want to be on the direct activation list, so they want to get that information first and they will distribute it amongst their people," said Vermont State Police Lt. Mark Lauer.

Police plan to run the test Thursday 12/4/08 at around 10 a.m. It will look like a real alert, except that there will be a note at the end and beginning indicating it is a test.

What exactly constitutes an Amber Alert in North Carolina? Can anyone ask law enforcement to issue one?

Q. What exactly constitutes an Amber Alert in North Carolina? Can anyone ask law enforcement to issue one?

A. State law sets the requirements for when an Amber Alert can be issued. All of the following conditions must be met:

□ The child is 17 years or younger.

□ The child is believed to have been abducted.

□ The child was not taken by a parent (unless the child is in danger).

□ The child is not believed to have left on his own (a runaway, for instance).

□ The abduction was reported to and is being investigated by a law-enforcement agency.

Amber stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. The acronym was derived in honor of Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped and killed in Texas in 1996.

North Carolina's Amber Alert system is a voluntary cooperative effort among state media broadcasters, local and state law enforcement, the N.C. Department of Transportation, and the N.C. Center for Missing Persons. The center issues the alerts at the request of law enforcement.

The highway signs help to immediately notify people of a criminally abducted child in their area. The Amber Alert hot line is 800-522-5437.

Boston Amber Alert cancelled boy found safe and sound...

Boston police have found the 9-year-old boy apparently kidnapped at gunpoint earlier this afternoon from River Street in Mattapan.

Police say he is “safe and sound,” however they are still looking for two suspects.

David Encarnacion, 9, had been last seen at 437 River Street wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. Police have yet to reveal details about his rescue, but one report has him found near Logan Airport.

A preliminary report suggests the boy was abducted during the course of an armed robbery, but investigators ran into a roadblock with a witness who could not speak English.

A “victim/witness” tells Boston police that he and the boy were “approached by two suspects at approximately 1:56 p.m. The two suspects then fled with the 9-year-old boy in the victim’s vehicle,” police report.

Attorney general: Beware Amber Alert phone scam News Updates Kansas.com:

Kansas Attorney General Steve Six is warning residents to be wary of a phone scam using the name of the Amber Alert program to defraud people.

The caller claims money is being raised to upgrade the Amber Alert program and that donations may be made by cash, credit card or check. The Kansas Amber Alert program is not soliciting money from the public, Six said.

Law enforcement officers in Osage County reported the scam, but it may be taking place in other parts of the state as well, he said. People receiving donation requests over the phone should investigate charities and fund-raising drives before giving.

Oak Forest tests red light cameras to catch child abductors

Oak Forest police are believed to be the first in the country and perhaps the world to successfully test the village's red light cameras to locate vehicles identified in an Amber Alert.

The test allows for police to search in real time for wanted vehicles involved in child abductions or other serious crimes.

Oak Forest police are testing red light cameras to see if they can aid in Amber Alerts.

Art Vassy, SouthtownStar Officials in the police department are calling the feature a 'priceless tool for law enforcement.'

On Nov. 14, the department entered an Oak Forest squad car's license plate number into the computer system of Gatso USA, the company that manufactures the cameras used in Oak Forest.

Once the cameras identify the targeted vehicle, a text message is sent to police department e-mail accounts along with an image of the vehicle captured on camera.

'They (police) have a secure portal of software to the whole system that allows them to control this feature. The idea is speed is of the essence. Within seconds our cameras are looking for a license plate number.'

Noble said the company is making the Amber Alert feature available immediately. It will be rolled out over next three months in several Illinois communities.

Gatso has contracts with Oak Forest and Homewood in the south suburbs as well as Streamwood, Hanover Park, Lake Zurich and just recently Waukegan."

States Disagree On Amber Alert Criteria / - Waco, Temple, Killeen Weather and News Authority

States Disagree On Amber Alert Criteria / - Waco, Temple, Killeen Weather and News Authority:

Despite a federal law meant to create a uniform system, an Associated Press review finds wide variations in the criteria for issuing Amber Alerts from one state to the next, which can heighten the tensions among authorities when a suspect crosses state lines.

The AP examined Amber Alert records from all 50 states and found that some barely keep track of the alerts they've issued, let alone whether they worked.

A few states don't have anyone designated to oversee their programs.

The poor record keeping makes it difficult to tell whether investigators have ever missed a chance to safely recover an abducted child because of differences in the state laws and their application.

Twelve states refuse to put out an alert when a parent calls police amid a custody fight, while others see that as a legitimate reason to enlist help from the public.

Twelve states issue Amber Alerts for adults with mental or physical disabilities, while other states save their bulletins solely for abducted children.

Amber Alerts were created in 1996 after the murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington.

The city developed a system in which police work with broadcasters to put out bulletins on abducted children, similar to severe weather warnings.
Soon, states began creating their own Amber Alert systems, and Congress established its own law in 2003."

States want to cancel the Amber Alerts system...What I think they should do?

There is news out there that certain States want to cancel the system alerts and I say they shouldn't... now when you disagree with something shouldn't you provide an answer to what you think?

Here is what I think, we have an issue that is kinda 2-fold... we got the criminals in prison working for private companies for peanuts, so why wouldn't we make these companies pay a fair wage... isn't the federal minimum wage $6.55/hr and soon to go up to $7.25 in 2009...yes it is!

So let's make these companies pay a fair wage and quit taking advantage of our prison system, they own a business(whatever the prisoners do), make them pay a fair wage, but then make the prisoners that say, have been convicted of like certain crimes pay back their debt to the cause to help fight it... like for instance the Amber Alert System...let them help pay the bill... isn't that what paying your debt to society means?

Simple Solution... Talk to your local elected officials about voting against cancelling the system and tell them that you will not vote for them if they support a candidate that will vote for cancelling the system.

Mother, Who Police Believe Faked Child's Kidnapping, Makes Court Appearance

Mother, Who Police Believe Faked Child's Kidnapping, Makes Court Appearance:

The South Valley mother who police say faked her child's kidnapping over the weekend, is expected to make her first court appearance on Wednesday.

According to police, 23-year-old Johanna Ramirez claimed two suspects broke into her Tulare home and kidnapped her and her two kids, leaving only a ransom note.

However, deputies later found Ramirez's vehicle with her 3-year-old daughter inside, bound at the hands and feet.

Deputies say the little girl told them it was her mother who had tied her up.
Ramirez is expected to be charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, child abuse, and filing a false police report."

~What's wrong with the Government, why in the heck do they should cancel the Amber Alert system when it is so effective for all these crazies!!!

Should Government Cancel Amber Alerts?

States and Counties are saying they may cancel Amber Alerts...

Here's the deal... I know you what an amber alert is or you wouldn't be reading this... so what you need to do is write, email, call your congressman, senator or other political person you know... and ask them not too... Tell them if they vote for it, no matter what it costs, you are not voting for them ever... or you are not voting for anyone that endorses that person... AND MEAN IT!!!

Use the power that you have!!!

Look in your local newspaper, the local phone book or heck just search the internet your local person.

Get Your Barack Obama Victory T-shirt

In the months and years ahead, we're going to accomplish amazing things together. No president has ever had the support of such a powerful grassroots movement, and Barack and Joe will need you to continue fighting alongside them.

But before we take the next step, we need to get our house in order.

The Democratic National Committee poured all of its resources into building our successful 50-state field program. And they played a crucial role in helping Barack win in unlikely states like North Carolina and Indiana. We even picked up an electoral vote in Nebraska.

The DNC took on considerable debt to make this happen.

Make a donation of $30 or more now to help the DNC pay for these efforts, and you'll get a commemorative 2008 Victory T-shirt.

The DNC began building a 50-state organization in 2005.

The infrastructure they put in place over the last four years opened up a new batch of battleground states where a Democratic nominee hadn't been competitive for a generation.

In the final few months, the DNC went above and beyond to expand our ground efforts and ensure victory.

We couldn't have won this election without their support.

As we start laying the groundwork for real change, we need to help the DNC recover the resources it took to win. Please make a donation today and get your 2008 Victory T-shirt:

https://donate.barackobama.com/victoryshirt

This movement for change is just getting started, and we look forward to working with you to bring the change this country needs.

Thanks for everything you did to elect Barack and Joe,

Obama for America

California proposes allowing ads on freeway signs

State proposes allowing ads on freeway signs Inland News PE.com Southern California News News for Inland Southern California:

State of California proposes allowing ads on freeway signs

The Press-Enterprise

Freeway message signs highlighting accidents and abducted children could soon be flashing something else: images of Golden Arches or the lowest rates you can get for your mortgage.
If a proposal from the Schwarzenegger administration comes to pass, thousands of commuters who travel across California freeways could become a captive audience for advertising on more than 600 highway signs when they are not in use to provide drivers with traffic conditions and Amber Alert messages. It is believed California would be the first state in the nation to allow public electronic signs to carry advertising.
Supporters say the proposal could raise millions of dollars for badly needed road repairs and for fixing up the signs themselves. Critics argue that showing advertising on the signs would cause visual blight and distraction for motorists.

Inland freeway message signs, similar to this one on the southbound side of Highway 91 near the Riverside/Corona border, could soon start displaying advertisements.
'I don't think they need any more distraction than they do now,' said Michael Tassinari Sr., 63, a retired truck driver who lives in Hemet. He said California already has a surplus of bad drivers and putting advertising directly in front of them would not help their motoring skills.
In addition to using highway message signs to generate cash for state coffers, other proposals under study include

I Didn't Vote For Obama

I have a confession to make... received from my friend Diane

I did not vote for Barack Obama today.

I've openly supported Obama since March. But I didn't vote for him today.

I wanted to vote for Ronald Woods. He was my algebra teacher at Clark Junior High in East St. Louis, IL. He died 15 years ago when his truck skidded head-first into a utility pole. He spent many a day teaching us many things besides the Pythagorean Theorem. He taught us about Medgar Evers, Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis and many other civil rights figures who get lost in the shadow cast by Martin Luther King, Jr.

But I didn't vote for Mr. Woods.

I wanted to vote for Willie Mae Cross. She owned and operated Crossroads Preparatory Academy for almost 30 years, educating and empowering thousands of kids before her death in 2003. I was her first student. She gave me my first job, teaching chess and math concepts to kids in grades K-4 in her summer program. She was always there for advice, cheer and consolation. Ms. Cross, in her own way, taught me more about walking in faith than anyone else I ever knew.

But I didn't vote for Ms. Cross.

I wanted to vote for Arthur Mells Jackson, Sr. and Jr. Jackson Senior was a Latin professor. He has a gifted school named for him in my hometown. Jackson Junior was the pre-eminent physician in my hometown for over 30 years. He has a heliport named for him at a hospital in my hometown. They were my great-grandfather and great-uncle, respectively.

But I didn't vote for Prof. Jackson or Dr. Jackson.

I wanted to vote for A.B. Palmer. She was a leading civil rights figure in Shreveport, Louisiana, where my mother grew up and where I still have dozens of family members. She was a strong-willed woman who earned the grudging respect of the town's leaders because she never, ever backed down from anyone and always gave better than she got. She lived to the ripe old age of 99, and has a community center named for her in Shreveport.

But I didn't vote for Mrs. Palmer.

I wanted to vote for these people, who did not live to see a day where a Black man would appear on their ballots on a crisp November morning.

In the end, though, I realized that I could not vote for them any more than I could vote for Obama himself.

So who did I vote for?

No one.

I didn't vote. Not for President, anyway.

Oh, I went to the voting booth. I signed, was given my stub, and was walked over to a voting machine. I cast votes for statewide races and a state referendum on water and sewer improvements.

I stood there, and I thought about all of these people, who influenced my life so greatly. But I didn't vote for who would be the 44th President of the United States.

When my ballot was complete, except for the top line, I finally decided who I was going to vote for - and then decided to let him vote for me. I reached down, picked him up, and told him to find Obama's name on the screen and touch it.

And so it came to pass that Alexander Reed, age 5, read the voting screen, found the right candidate, touched his name, and actually cast a vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Oh, the vote will be recorded as mine. But I didn't cast it.

Then again, the person who actually pressed the Obama box and the red "vote" button was the person I was really voting for all along.

It made the months of donating, phonebanking, canvassing, door hanger distributing, sign posting, blogging, arguing and persuading so much sweeter.

So, no, I didn't vote for Barack Obama. I voted for a boy who now has every reason to believe he, too, can grow up to be anything he wants...even President.

Very important races in the country

There are just a few short days left before Americans head to the polls, and I'd like to ask you for your help once more.

I went through the races with my political team one final time, and we picked these very important races in the country -- the ones right on the edge, the ones where your donation can make the difference with just a few days to go.

I can promise you this: your donation to these candidates will go directly to helping them get out every vote and winning on November 4.

Here are the Democrats who need your help right now:

In Mississippi, Ronnie Musgrove has shocked the pundits by pulling extremely close in his race to win a Senate seat for Democrats. His conservative, Republican opponent has even resorted to ads attacking me and my supporters. It's up to you to keep Ronnie's momentum going.

In Pennsylvania, my good friend John Murtha -- a strong supporter for me during the primaries and an important voice against the war in Iraq -- is depending on your help to win.

Raul Martinez in Florida has a great chance at picking up a Democratic seat from a conservative Republican incumbent. The latest polling has this race in dead heat and Raul needs our help to push back against Republican attacks.

And in John McCain's home state of Arizona, Ann Kirkpatrick has a very good chance to pick up a Republican-held seat. She'll be the first Democrat ever elected in Arizona's 1st district -- if you help her today.

This is your last chance to make a difference for Democrats in tight races -- please contribute directly to Ronnie, John, Raul, and Ann today.

I'm so proud of all the work we've done, and so proud to have done it with you. I can't wait to celebrate with you on November 4, as we elect a Democratic President and a strong Democratic Congress.

Thank you,

Hillary

Forward this post for Barack Obama

We have 5 days left to make sure as many people as possible cast their votes for change.

But you'd be surprised at how many of your friends and family don't know where to vote -- or that they can vote as early as today in Indiana, a crucial battleground state.

Take a minute to look up your own early vote location on our voting website, VoteForChange.com, then please forward this email to your friends, family, and neighbors so they can look up theirs, too.

On VoteForChange.com you can find where to vote and get crucial early voting information.

Voting early is easy, convenient, and lets you avoid possible long lines on Election Day. And if you vote early, you know you'll be free on Election Day to volunteer in our historic get out the vote effort.

This race is too close for you -- or anyone you know -- not to vote.

Can you forward this email to at least five friends, family members, or coworkers and tell them to look up their early vote location?

Supporters like you can transform this country, and I'm counting on your help to make sure every Obama supporter in Indiana knows they don't have to wait another day to cast their votes for change.

Thank you for your help,

Jon

Wanna join Barack at the festivites in Chicago?

I'm writing to report that we're seeing a surge of support in states we didn't expect to be close contests, including Georgia and North Dakota.

But the latest battleground is a major opportunity:

John McCain's home state of Arizona -- where we go on the air today.

Democrats haven't been able to compete in these states in years -- and each could open a new path to victory on Election Day. Make a donation of $5 or more today to expand our efforts in these new battleground states.

As a bonus, any donation you make today means you could be selected for a trip to join Barack in Chicago on Election Night. We'll fly you and a guest in, put you up in a hotel, and make sure you have some of the best seats for our huge public event with tens of thousands of supporters:

Volunteers and staff are on the move in these new battleground states, and if we can provide them with the right support, they could put us over the top four days from now.

We can't take anything for granted, and this election is too important to ignore any potential path to victory. We need your help right now.

Please make a donation to help us change the electoral map, and bring a real change to our country:

https://donate.barackobama.com/frontrow

It's a volatile political landscape, and in the final four days we have to take the fight to our opponents everywhere we can.

Thank you,

David

David Plouffe
Campaign Manager
Obama for America

P.S. -- If you cannot make a donation, you can still help get us across the finish line by volunteering to help get out the vote:

CDW Pushes Further into Retail

CDW Pushes Further into Retail

CDW Corporation (Vernon Hills, IL) has expanded its retail portfolio to include merchant services from Chase Paymentech (Dallas) as well as new integrated product offerings in POS, Auto ID, and digital signage. This includes CDW’s “Store-in-a-Truck” concept, which takes a complete blueprint of the retailer’s IT, including servers, power, networking, telephony, merchant services, and POS lanes, and replicates it at new stores and in store refreshes, thereby enabling retailers to simplify IT implementation. CDW has also grown its team of retail technology specialists to help businesses develop custom-configured solutions and specialized services for optimal technology performance.

“The current economic environment is challenging for consumers and retailers alike, so more than ever, retailers need to make sound investments in affordable technology solutions that allow them to improve their competitive position and pass savings on to their customers,” stated Marc Barnett, Senior Manager of Solutions at CDW. “We have expanded our offerings to include end-to-end, industry-specific solutions and services to help retailers reduce costs, protect their business, streamline their operations, and ultimately enhance the customer experience.”

“Through this partnership, the establishment of a payment processing solution is less confusing, more convenient, and less expensive for CDW customers—large or small,” observed Greg Schaub, EVP, Business Development at Chase Paymentech Solutions. “This complements CDW’s well-earned reputation for helping small businesses. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver our knowledge and expertise in payment processing to CDW’s retail customers.” That will include more competitive discount rates, simplified fee structures, and improved transaction reporting.

"We like to think we differentiate ourselves at a higher level in these types of economic climates, based on how we solve business problems for customers," Barnett shared with RRN.Com in discussing the timing of CDW's announcement, adding, "Customers are still purchasing retail products and services every single day."

The Truth about the McCain-Palin Health Care Plan

To the McCain Community:

Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently lied to Americans about John McCain's plan. Their claims have failed every fact check from CBS to the Washington Post. John McCain is not going to raise taxes on middle class families. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the only ones in this race that plan to raise taxes. Their recent attacks have become increasingly misleading. Read the fact sheet below or click here to learn the truth about the McCain-Palin Health Care Plan.

Sincerely,

Doug Holtz-Eakin
Senior Policy Advisor
McCain-Palin 2008

The Truth about the McCain-Palin Health Care Plan

Barack Obama And Joe Biden Have Consistently Lied To Americans About John McCain's Plan. Their claims have failed every fact-check - from CBS to the Washington Post. John McCain is not going to raise taxes on middle class families. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the only ones in this race that plan to raise taxes.

OBAMA FICTION
John McCain Will Tax Health Care Benefits For The First Time And Will Be the Largest Middle Class Tax Increase In History.

THE FACTS
This Obama charge is a blatant mischaracterization of the McCain Health Plan. It only focuses on the fact that the value of the employer provided insurance will now show up as additional income for the employees - what he fails to mention - is that John McCain's generous refundable tax credit ($5,000 for families and $2,500 for individuals) will not only shield millions of families from a tax increase but will actually give them MORE dollars to invest in their health care needs.

The McCain Plan DOES NOT tax:

Premiums paid by families and individuals

Employers for providing health care coverage

Medical expenses like the cost of a procedure or medication

Insurance claims

Approach Supported By Obama's Own Advisor: This is an approach supported by Barack Obama's own Senior Economic Advisor Jason Furman who wrote that "we could scrap the current deduction altogether and replace it with progressive tax credits that, together with other changes, would ensure that every American has affordable health insurance."

Better Than "Members of Congress": Under the McCain Plan, your employer can provide you with health insurance as good as a "Member of Congress" (approximately $12,000), and you would pay no more in taxes - regardless of your tax bracket. In fact, you would have additional money left over from the McCain tax credit to put in a health savings account.

Where Is The Middle-Class "Tax Increase"? If you or your family is in the 28% bracket, with an income of $180,000, you could receive employer provided health insurance even better than a Member of Congress, with a cost of almost $18,000, with no increase in taxes. Even the liberal leaning Tax Policy Center, agrees that the McCain proposals will result in a "net tax benefit" of more than $1,200 for an average tax payer. A recent Lewin Group study estimated savings of more than $1,400 per American family - almost three times the savings as under the Obama plan.

OBAMA FICTION
The McCain Plan Will Reduce Medicare Spending By Billions By "Cutting Benefits, Eligibility or Both."

THE FACTS
John McCain believes that we can achieve savings in Medicare without reducing benefits or eligibility. He has proposed common-sense reforms that will not only put Medicare on a path of financial stability but ensure access to quality care for millions of Americans. Some of the policies proposed by the McCain plan include:

Promote payment reform that allows us to move away from the current fragmented and volume-based service to a system which rewards coordinated and quality focused care.

Eliminate Medicare fraud and abuse to ensure that nearly $60 billion a year, almost 10 percent of total Medicare spending, that goes to line the pocket of criminals instead of providing quality care for seniors.

Ensure that drug premiums for the wealthiest Americans are not being subsidized by the middle class.

Promote a new generation of treatment models that better manage chronic care conditions while rewarding prevention and wellness.

Greater use of Health IT and medical homes to promote greater co-ordination of care.

Reduce drug costs by allowing greater use of generics (including bio-generics).
The Obama Spin: If some of the proposals above sound familiar to Senator Obama's proposals including - better managing chronic care diseases, greater use of health IT, promoting prevention and greater use of generic drugs - because they are. Only the liberal media and the Obama campaign would characterize similar proposals as "savings" in the their plan and "cutting benefits, eligibility or both" in the McCain plan.

OBAMA FICTION
John McCain Will Tax Health Care Benefits For The First Time And Send The Money Straight To The Insurance Companies.

THE FACTS
Another desperate attack by the Obama campaign. Here is what they purposefully fail to mention - the credit goes to the insurance company that the American family chooses to get coverage from, anywhere in the nation. The power of choice lies with the family - not government bureaucrats or insurance companies.

Putting Families In Charge: Under the McCain Plan American families will not only decide where the tax credit should be directed for their coverage needs but any additional money left over after purchasing coverage will be controlled by the family in a portable health savings account. Ridiculing this line of strange attack, The Associated Press stated, "Of course it would, because it's meant to pay for insurance. That's like saying money for a car loan will go straight to the car dealer."

Obama Criticizing His Own Approach: Most importantly, Senator Obama is criticizing an approach that is used by his own HOPE credits - where tax payer money simply goes from the federal government to colleges.

OBAMA FICTION
Americans With Pre-Existing Condition Under The McCain Plan Will Not Find Coverage.

THE FACTS
John McCain believes that no American should be denied access to quality and affordable coverage simply because of a pre-existing condition. As President, John McCain will work with governors to develop a best practice model that states can follow - a Guaranteed Access Plan or GAP - that would reflect the best experience of the states to ensure these patients have access to health coverage. There would be reasonable limits on premiums, and assistance would be available for Americans below a certain income level.

OBAMA FICTION
The McCain Health Plan Will Damage Employer Provided Insurance For Millions of Americans.

THE FACTS
The McCain health plan builds on the employer-based system. Employers will have the same incentive to provide health insurance as they do today since they will continue to deduct the cost of health insurance they provide to employees.

Millions With Employer Coverage Will Do Better Under The McCain Plan: Millions of American families with employer sponsored coverage in all tax brackets with the same coverage as a "Members of Congress" will now come out ahead with additional funds going into a portable health savings account. Importantly, younger and healthier employees with the McCain health care tax credit will have a bigger incentive to stay with the employers. For example, a 25-year-old employee in the 25 percent tax bracket with a $2,500 tax credit could either purchase a policy in the individual market for the same amount or stay with his employer plan and receive a $5,000 policy with an additional $1,250 to invest in a portable health savings account. Why would people choose fewer benefits for more money?
So Why Is Barack Obama Hiding Details About His Plan?

Barack Obama's Plan Will Harm Employer Coverage
The Obama plan includes a $179 billion a year employer mandate. The mandate requires employers to either provide "meaningful" coverage or pay a tax towards the government plan. Faced with tough economic conditions and rising health costs this creates a clear incentive for employers to drop coverage and move families into the new government plan. A Lewin Group study which examined a similar employer mandate combined with a national plan, like the Obama plan, concluded that almost 52 million individuals would lose their private employer coverage. To maintain their competitive edge, others employers will follow - spelling the demise of the employer coverage system.

Barack Obama's Plan Continues The Push Toward Government-Run Healthcare
The Obama plan will create a brand new government-run health plan at the cost of $243 billion a year - a financial burden of more than $3,000 a year on American families.

Barack Obama's Plan Will Damage Private Coverage
The government-run plan will have a clear advantage over private insurance since it will be subsidized by American taxpayers. A recent analysis of both plans by the nonpartisan CATO Institute concluded that the Obama government-run plan will be able to "keep its premiums artificially low...since it can turn to the U.S. Treasury to cover any shortfalls" resulting in "undercutting the private market." According to Wall Street Journal, the goal of the Obama plan "...like HillaryCare in the 1990s, is to displace current private coverage and switch people to the default government option."
