BlackBerry Storm2 Announced: 5 Ways It's Better - Reviews by PC Magazine

BlackBerry Storm2 Announced: Five Ways It's Better - Reviews by PC Magazine: "On Thursday, RIM and Verizon announced the long-rumored BlackBerry Storm2 9550.

RIM didn't just add a new coat of paint and a few software tweaks with the new device. Finally, the innovative touchscreen smartphone just works, and just a few key deficiencies kept it from earning an Editor's Choice award.

After getting our hands on it (for the full BlackBerry Storm2 review, please click here), we've decided it's a great device and the phone RIM should have released the first time out. What has been improved? Here are five big differences between the Storm and Storm2.

1) A vastly improved touchscreen: Let's just say it: the first Storm's touch screen was weird. When it came out, people couldn't stop talking about its odd clicking touch screen that provided haptic feedback. It was like pushing down on a physical button, and yet it wasn't. Not compared to a keyboard, anyway. The Storm2's screen has a lot of similarities to the original, but now RIM has placed four electrical actuators under the screen (one for each corner). This makes the screen more responsive and better for typing.

Netbooks Drive #Acer to #2 PC Vendor in World - Reviews by PC Magazine

Netbooks Drive Acer to #2 PC Vendor in World - Reviews by PC Magazine: "A whopping 26 percent increase in unit sales pushed Acer ahead of Dell in global PC sales, with Acer achieving the runner-up position for the first time.

IDC released its third-quarter PC estimates on Wednesday, placing Taiwan's Acer in the number-two spot. Dell suffered an 8.4 percent drop in unit shipments, IDC reported, the only vendor in the top five worldwide to record lower overall unit sales on a worldwide basis. Dell's U.S shipments declined as well.

Within the United States, however, Dell handily maintained its position as the second-ranked PC vendor. HP retained the top spot, in both worldwide and U.S. shipments, but just edged out Dell within the U.S.

Overall, global PC shipments rose by 2.3 percent to 78.1 million units, in what IDC called 'an important continuation of recovery from year-on-year declines of 6.8 percent in the first quarter and 2.4 percent in the second quarter.'"

Stimulus funding fuels hope for Gary :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune

Stimulus funding fuels hope for Gary :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune: "GARY -- Mayor Rudy Clay and his cabinet are promoting positive projects taking place in their city as federal stimulus dollars continue to roll in.

'Gary, Indiana, right now is in the red zone, going into the end zone,' Clay said Wednesday in an editorial board meeting with the Post-Tribune.

Those projects include 200 LED street lights that will be erected around Gary using a federal energy conservation block grant.

Joel Rodriguez, Clay's special assistant for economic development, said those lights will save the city 1,313 megawatt hours of energy over 13 years.
The city also still plans on replacing 120 vehicles in its fleet with fuel-efficient vehicles using a $3 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration.

'The city of Gary is being proactive,' Christopher Meyers, director of planning, said."

One dead, two wounded in #Gary shooting

One dead, two wounded in Gary shooting: "The shooting is under investigation. Gary police are asking anyone with information to contact Cpl. Art Azcona, who can be reached at (219) 881-7435.

Monday's shooting followed another violent weekend in the Steel City.

Brandon Sykes, 32, of Merrillville, died of multiple gunshot wounds Saturday after being shot in the 2400 block of Delaware Street. Police said he'd argued with someone earlier about a block from where he was gunned down.

Meanwhile, two men were grazed by bullets at the intersection of 17th and Tyler streets just after 6 p.m. Saturday, police said. And Lorenzo Adams, 26, was shot in the legs while walking to a store near 41st Avenue and Broadway. Police said two men began firing on Adams and his cousin, who had just disarmed another man who tried to shoot them.

Police said none of the shootings Saturday were believed to be related."

Two days of amnesty left for tax evaders 10/15/09 -- DailyFinance

Two days of amnesty left for tax evaders -- DailyFinance: "If you've secretly been holding money offshore and haven't reported it on your taxes, you must do so by Thursday, Oct. 15. That's when the IRS ends its current tax amnesty program, so if you wait any longer, you could face huge fines and jail time. Furthermore, UBS (UBS), Switzerland's largest bank, is about to release another 4,450 names of account holders suspected of tax evasion to the U.S. government, and once the IRS has your name, it will be too late to make a deal.

In September, the IRS decided to shift the audits of wealthy Americans suspected of offshore tax evasion to the elite division that examines businesses. The IRS posted internal job listings seeking auditors to work for a newly created office within its Large and Mid-Size Business division that will monitor what the IRS called the "global high-wealth industry."

If you are uncertain about what to do, time is running out to seek legal advice. Even if you decide not to file, you'd be wise to sit down with a tax attorney and determine your best course of action. I doubt the IRS is going to play nice, and all indications are that it intends to beef up its policing of offshore accounts.

Ford Recalls 4.5 Million Additional Vehicles In Switch Recall

Ford Recalls 4.5 Million Additional Vehicles In Switch Recall: "Ford Motor Co. says it will add 4.5 million older-model vehicles to the list of those recalled because a defective cruise control switch could cause a fire.

Ford says 1.1 million Ford Windstar minivans will be recalled for repairs due to a small risk of fires.
The company says another 3.4 million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles with the same switches also will be recalled even though there have been no reports of fires. Those vehicles mainly are trucks and SUVs.

All vehicles covered by the recall are from the 1992 to 2003 model years.

Sherwood says this is Ford's seventh recall due to the Texas Instruments speed control switches. The recalls cover a total of 14.3 million vehicles and combined are the largest in Ford's history."

Obama's Favorite Phrase: 'Let Me Be Clear'

Obama's Favorite Phrase: 'Let Me Be Clear': "Yet in the portfolio of presidential phrases, none is more pervasive than Obama's four-word favorite: Let me be clear.
It is his emphatic windup for, well, everything.

'Let me be clear,' he said in describing his surprise at winning the Nobel Peace Prize. 'I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.'

'Let me be clear,' he said in one of his dozens of pitches for a health insurance overhaul. 'If you like your doctor or health-care provider, you can keep them.'

Presidents talk so much in public that it is not surprising to find rhetorical patterns. Although Obama is known for a flair with the written and spoken word, his hardest mission is often to make complicated matters relevant to the masses."

Dell To Close North Carolina Desktop Plant - Hardware - IT Channel News by CRN

Dell To Close North Carolina Desktop Plant - Hardware - IT Channel News by CRN: "'From a desktop perspective, we have seen declines in demand from customers and growing traction with notebooks among customers. With that dynamic in mind, we made the difficult decision to close the plant,' the spokesperson said.

The decision to close the facility comes as part of Dell's stated initiative to remove $4 billion of operational expenses by the end of fiscal year 2011, but it also occurred due to a decline in revenues in the desktop market, according to a Dell spokesperson.

The volume previously handled by the North Carolina plant will be transferred to several company-owned locations around the world, including facilities in the U.S., Poland and India. In January of 2009, Dell laid off 1,900 employees at its Limerick, Ireland, plant. Production from the manufacturing plant in Ireland was transferred to an existing facility in Poland and third-party OEM partners.

The Round Rock, Texas-based computer manufacturer was offered an estimated $300 million in tax incentives to build the manufacturing plant in Forsyth County, N.C., in 2005, The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area reports. But with the company making the decision to close to plant, Dell is on the line to repay much of the incentive money.

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue Friday told the AP that she intends to make Dell repay 'every red cent' it was granted in tax breaks and incentives for not sustaining its end of the bargain."

Researchers Say Photo of Jim Morrison's Ghost Is Real - Spinner

Researchers Say Photo of Jim Morrison's Ghost Is Real - Spinner: "Back in 1997, Meisner decided to take a snapshot next to the rock legend's grave in the famous Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, not exactly an uncommon thing to do considering some 1000 people visit the grave daily. The photo, taken by Meisner's assistant, shows the historian casually standing next to Morrison's plot with one hand in his pocket and a white cloudy shadow to his left, the latter going unnoticed until Meisner finally decided to revisit the photo in 2002. The cloudy obscure image to Meisner's left appeared to be the deceased singer himself.

Word quickly spread thanks to the Internet and the historian sent the photo in for further analysis, which concluded that the snapshot was indeed as bone chilling as it was first perceived. In a new book titled 'Ghosts Caught on Film 2: Photographs of the Unexplained,' researchers rule out both lightning and image manipulation and conclude that the photo is simply 'unexplainable.'"

Mickey Rourke Refuses to Apologize for Gay Slurs -- PopEater

Rourke Refuses to Apologize for Gay Slurs -- PopEater: "Mickey Rourke has activists up in arms after he attempted to defend video footage of him calling a journalist a gay slur. 'I don't really give a f***. Life's too short,' Rourke told UK's The Sun. 'I have more gay friends than any 50 straight people I know, so I don't really give a s***. I meant what I said,' he added.

The film, dating back to last November, features an inebriated Rourke hitting back at a reporter for claiming he was dating actress Evan Rachel Wood. 'She's a good friend, that's it. And tell that f***ot who wrote all that shit in the paper I'd like to break his f****** legs,' he said."

Jaguars Player Reportedly Causes Two Car Wrecks, Tries to Flee Scene -- NFL FanHouse

Jaguars Player Reportedly Causes Two Car Wrecks, Tries to Flee Scene -- NFL FanHouse: "Friday, Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Quentin Groves was headed to the airport to catch his team's chartered flight to Seattle -- where they'd eventually get their teeth kicked in, 41-0. On the way, though, he wasn't exactly what you would call a cautious motorist.

According to reports from the Jacksonville area, Groves did some damage to two different vehicles with some careless driving. Reportedly, Groves clipped one car while changing lanes -- sending it spinning -- and then abruptly changed lanes again before slamming on the brakes. This caused another car to end up wedged under Groves' car.

When Groves stopped to confer with the driver of the vehicle under the back of his car, he simply said that he was 'a Jaguar' and had 'a plane to catch.' So, he just took off, the reports said.

A good Samaritan-type in the area ended up following Groves and blocked his car about a quarter-mile away until police arrived. Reports late Sunday night on the Florida Times-Union's Web site indicate Groves was not charged with fleeing the scene. He was only given a warning, which is totally the police officer's discretion, for an improper lane change. There was ambiguity whether Groves was actually charged with causing both crashes, as a full police report had not been completed yet, according the the Times-Union's report."

British Soldier Matthew Millington Died From Cancerous Lung Transplant

British Soldier Matthew Millington Died From Cancerous Lung Transplant: "Matthew Millington, 31, needed the transplant because of the terminal respiratory condition he was diagnosed with in 2006. But the person the organs came from smoked 30 to 50 rolled cigarettes a day, reported the Times of London.

Millington received the double lung transplant in April 2007. A cancerous tumor was found six months later, and the soldier died in February 2008.
Because he was a cancer patient, he was not eligible to receive another transplant.

The inquest was told that Millington died of complications from the transplant surgery and the immuno-suppressive drugs he was given so his body would not reject his new lungs, reported the U.K.'s Press Association."

Pennsylvania Man Sleeps Through House Fire, Collapsing Roof

Pennsylvania Man Sleeps Through House Fire, Collapsing Roof: "PITTSBURGH (Oct. 12) — A suburban Pittsburgh man slept soundly as his home caught on fire and partially collapsed.

It wasn't until firefighters did a walk-through of the home more than two hours later that he woke up.

Ross Township Fire Marshal John Reubi said he was 'flabbergasted' that anyone survived the blaze. It broke out around 2:40 a.m. Sunday and was reported by a passer-by.
Firefighters were initially unable to search for victims because part of the roof collapsed. After controlling the fire, firefighters walked through and found the man in a bedroom. Reubi said it appeared the man had no idea what was going on.

Officials said the house had several additions, perhaps shielding the man's room from flames. He was treated for smoke inhalation."

Nine Tricks if You're Bad With Names - Careers Articles

Nine Tricks if You're Bad With Names - Careers Articles: "Ah, names. Some people have gift for remembering them. But for far too many of us, they go in one ear and right out the other. Unfortunately, referring to everyone as 'hey' or 'you' can be suicide when it comes to networking.'In networking, names are the good stuff,' say Anne Barber and Lynne Waymon, co-authors of 'Make Your Contacts Count' (Amacom). 'It will be mighty difficult for you to initiate a relationship with someone if you don't know that person's name.'If remembering others' names is downright impossible for you, try out these tips from Barber and Waymon:

1. Repeat the first name or confirm the last name.Simply saying, 'It's nice to meet you, Chuck' or 'and your last name was...?' will help you register the name and give it a better chance to implant itself into your memory."

Pentagon airs criticism of ‘don’t ask’ - The Boston Globe

Pentagon airs criticism of ‘don’t ask’ - The Boston Globe: "The article is likely to be applauded by gay rights groups that have been lobbying the Obama administration to take action to overturn the ban. But it is also likely to embolden supporters of the current law such as Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, a Washington think tank.

She believes that allowing gays to serve openly in all ranks and units - as the Murphy bill stipulates - would severely damage unit cohesion. “It is tantamount to saying that men should share the same living spaces with women,’’ she said. “Society may have changed but the need for good order and discipline has not changed.’’

Donnelly also contends that the experiences of foreign militaries should not be a guide for the US armed forces, saying that some of them have conscript armies and do not allow gays to serve in elite combat units.

“These are not role models for the United States,’’ she said. “Congress is being asked to impose a risky military social experiment that is duplicated nowhere in the world.’’"

Scenes from the Sidelines: 2009 Circle City Classic Parade 2009 « This So-Called Post-Post-Racial Life

Scenes from the Sidelines: Circle City Classic Parade 2009 « This So-Called Post-Post-Racial Life: "This year’s musical theme (like the theme of Black Expo) was Michael Jackson. “Pretty Young Thing”—a jam even on a bad day—is even better when played by a full marching band and fronted by an MJ impersonator. You have not seen a “Thriller” line dance until you have seen it performed by about 60 young people carrying band instruments and batons and giant colorful flags. Almost every marching band from middle schoolers to college had an MJ homage.

And Gary Roosevelt High School was one of the main bands representing their hometown hero with a musical tribute.

As I have already said here, my kid got a chance to meet Olympic swimmer, Cullen Jones.

Our governor also came over and said a few words to her, patted the top of her Blues Clues cap, and told her to stay in school. She looked at him strangely (”Why wouldn’t I stay in school, Mommy?”) and asked me who that man was. I told her she had just spoken with the governor of our state. She was not impressed. I guess he is no Cullen Jones.

I must be old. I did not know that Master P and his son Romeo (I guess no longer lil) passed by until a group of young female fans started squeeling and begging to be put in the video they’d be filming at halftime of the game.

All the Black Greeks were in full force, wearing their colors proudly and stepping.

Wendy Williams rode by and was flattered when That One Section (the one who is so organized every year, with their chorus of personal hellos to the passing dignitaries) said in unison “How you doin!”"

Lakeshore Classic in Gary seeking suburban school :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune

Lakeshore Classic in Gary seeking suburban school :: Lake County :: Post-Tribune: "GARY -- One slot remains for a high school basketball team to play in next month's Second Annual Lakeshore Classic, and Gary Chamber of Commerce Director Chuck Hughes said he wants to find a suburban school to fill it.

'If the Lakeshore Classic is nothing else,' Hughes said, 'it is a regional event.'
Mayor Rudy Clay, state Sens. Lonnie Randolph and Earline Rogers and state Rep. Earl Harris joined Hughes at a press conference Thursday to announce this year's tournament, which will take place Nov. 27 and 28 at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary.

The event already features basketball teams from West Side, Roosevelt and Bowman Academy, T.C. Howe Community High School in Indianapolis and Foreman High School in Chicago.

College teams from Central State and Wilberforce universities in Ohio, Fisk University in Tennessee and Tuskegee University in Alabama are also expected to participate.

Hughes said the Lakeshore Classic is more than a basketball tournament, but an 'educational event for the entire region.'"

DJ AM, T.I. win at BET Hip-Hop Awards - Today's News: Our Take TVGuide.com: "The Associated Press reported that T.I.'s fiancée, Tameka 'Tiny' Cottle, accepted his awards at the ceremony in Atlanta and read a letter from him. He began serving a yearlong sentence in late May on a federal weapons conviction.

Cottle quoted the rapper as writing: 'My road to redemption is almost over. ... Thanks for the support.'

Jay-Z and Drake also were winners, as was Ice Cube, who received the 'I Am Hip-Hop' icon award.
Ice Cube helped launch the gangsta rap genre with the group NWA, and he starred in 'Barbershop' and 'Friday,' which he also co-wrote.

'When you get recognized by your peers for a life of work, you got to be humbled,' he said. 'I'm honored by this. I have 20 more years of work left in me. I hope (BET) is ready to give out two of these awards.'

Email Attacks Put Other Types of Accounts in Jeopardy | WebProNews

Email Attacks Put Other Types of Accounts in Jeopardy WebProNews: "You've probably seen reports of big webmail phishing attacks over the week. A spokesperson for Symantec's Message Labs tells WebProNews, however, that most reports have glossed over a key point to consider. That is that the potential impact on other aspects of victims' online lives are in jeopardy as well.

'The bad guys have more than just access to users' email accounts,' says the spokesperson. 'They have access to a host of other online services the victims use.'

Paul Wood, MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst says, 'A user's unique email address is often used to authenticate a number of web sites, including social networking sites and Instant Messaging on a public Instant Messaging (IM) network. If your email address has been compromised, not only should you change the password there, you should also change it on any other site that uses that email address as a log in ID.'

If a cybercriminal had the email account information and wanted to take over a related social networking account, all they would have to do is try the password reminder links from the login pages. Then they could use the victim's email to spam, but they could also gain access to other personal information, not to mention use your account to spam social networks as well."

Yahoo Snags Microsoft Sales Exec | WebProNews

Yahoo Snags Microsoft Sales Exec WebProNews: "Yahoo may still have a few tricks up its sleeve, and the company pulled off one by getting a Microsoft sales exec to join its ranks.

This morning, Kara Swisher described Seth Dallaire as one of Microsoft's top ad sales execs, and then wrote, 'Yahoo confirmed that Dallaire joined the company last week, as VP of mid-market sales, a newly-created role responsible for all mid-market sales efforts across search and display advertising.'

Dallaire looks to be a good catch. In fact, he worked for Microsoft for about seven years, and so should have a great idea of how its ad business operates. Another important detail is that he spent a couple of years at Amazon working as a senior account manager.

Dallaire was educated at Vassar College and New York University, too, which isn't a bad combo."

Google: IT Departments Moving Toward the Cloud | WebProNews

Google: IT Departments Moving Toward the Cloud WebProNews: "The poll covered 1,125 IT decision-makers. Google has prepared an entire report based on the findings, which is available for perusal here (pdf).

The report covers measurement of IT success, IT's role in communications security and compliance, mapping cloud computing benefits to IT performance metrics, barriers to cloud computing adoption, etc.

'The findings provide some insights on what types of organizations are moving to the cloud, what value they find there, and what the key drivers for and barriers to adoption are,' says Adam Swidler of the Google Postini Services team.

On the Google Enterprise Blog, the company shares some key findings from the survey:

- More than 60% of respondents indicated that the IT department holds the majority of the responsibility for communications security and compliance, but fewer than 20% feel they are well equipped to handle it.

- Email security, web security, and messaging are the cloud applications most widely adopted, and organizations using these applications in the cloud report higher satisfaction than users of traditional platforms.

- Ease of use is cited as the key motivator for transitioning to cloud-based applications.

- Although price is mentioned as a key deterrent for respondents who are not yet using cloud-based apps, value is cited as a key benefit by respondents who already work in the cloud."

Where Google Stands on the "Keywords" Meta Tag | WebProNews

Where Google Stands on the "Keywords" Meta Tag WebProNews: "Google does note that its enterprise Search Appliance has the ability to match meta tags, but this is of course separate from Google web search.

As I have said before, these videos and other tips Google frequently gives out are worth paying attention to for any webmaster looking to rank well. Whether they're talking about duplicate content, meta tags, or paid links, they're all aimed at telling webmasters how it is, and clarifying any misconceptions to the contrary. Whether you agree with Google's methods in all cases or not, the tips are for your benefit.

Like it or not, Google controls what people find on the web when they search. The company's huge market share is just something that is. There is always the possibility that could change in the future, but at this point, it looks like webmasters are not going to be able to ignore Google for a long time, if they hope to be found on the web by searchers.

We realize (and Google surely does too) that many well-seasoned marketers already know that Google ignores the 'keywords' meta tag, but webmasters are born everyday, and not all of them have been so heavily seasoned to this point, and that's why Google puts this information out there. There is always misinformation (particularly when it comes to search), and sometimes the record just has to be set straight. Who better to do that than Google itself?"

Massive Click Fraud Ring Shut Down | WebProNews

Massive Click Fraud Ring Shut Down WebProNews: "'This is really the first time anyone has ever been able to catch click fraudsters 'in the act.' Anchor has identified fraudsters down to the publisher site, IPs used (likely via botnets), and even the names and address of some perpetrators,' an Anchor spokesperson told WebProNews.

'We have an ongoing collaboration with the San Francisco Division of the FBI as well as the National Cyber-Forensics & Training Alliance (NCFTA) to share insights about the tactics used by these and other click fraud perpetrators.'

The Chinese fraud ring consisted of thousands of publishers who created websites and generated fake ad traffic on these sites with the purpose of defrauding ad networks and advertisers.

Anchor says the click fraud hit the ads of nearly 2,000 advertisers across multiple ad networks. The clicks originated from 200,000 IPs, and if undetected would have cost the affected advertisers over $3 million over the course of a year."
